- Girls: Gombe Secondary School (Uganda) 29-27 St Joseph’s Girls Kitale (Kenya)
Gombe Secondary School won Gold in Girls’ Handball at the 2026 Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSA) Games held in Morogoro city, Tanzania.
The Mpigi District based school edged a hard battling St Joseph’s Girls Kitale (Kenya) 29-27 during the well contested finale at the Morogoro Teachers’ College (MTC) playgrounds.
The head coach of Gombe SS handball team Azizi Yakoub congratulated the team upon attaining this landmark feat.
Azizi attributed this sporting excellence to good planning and hardwork from the early days of assembling the team.
“I wish to congratulate my team players in a special way. We effectively planned for this journey from player recruitment” he recollects.
Hard-work & Belief:
Right from every planning meeting, training session and match played, there was the zeal to win.
“We really worked hard, as one unit. There was belief in what we were executing and these are the fruits” Azizi boldly attests.
Gombe S.S’ historic squad comprised the likes of Shamilah Abdul Aziz, Moreen Nansamba, Flavia Nakawala, Irene Blessing Acangome, Aisha Nanyonjo, Ritah Recho Ato, Ruth Alimo, Leah Letasi, Tiani Nakiriya, Tendo Nantongo, Racheal Mbekeka, Moreen Moriku, Docus Masawi and Patience Mutenyo.
This is the same team that also championed the district and national championships in the same year.
Meanwhile, Wampeewo Ntake earned silver after losing to Kenya’s Musingu Boys in the boys’ handball final.
Uganda played second fiddle to Kenya in the overall standings. Tanzania were third, as Rwanda and Burundi followed suit.
Uganda’s delegations to Kenya have all since returned home safely.
Over 6000 students from the different schools of Tanzania (hosts), Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda and Burundi competed at the games.
