Speaking in an interview with St. Lucia Times, physical education teacher Selwyn McLennon highlighted the importance of activities like athletics for the holistic development of young boys.

“A meet like this is tremendously important, especially when it comes to occupying children and bringing out their fullest potential,” he said. “It gives them proper sportsmanship; they learn how to properly interact with each other on a team, with their opponents, and how to be respectful, because a sport like track and field has a lot of rules. Something like this is very important for their holistic development. It brings them around and gives them character.”

McLennon further emphasised the importance of sports as a tool to keep young males focused and grounded.

“A lot of the boys are wayward nowadays because they don’t see much of a goal, much of a reason. But things like this often give you an idea, something to look forward to, more or less an ideology for you to abide by.”
