Gulf disturbance could become first Atlantic storm of 2026

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The National Hurricane Center continues to closely monitor a disturbance in the Gulf region that could become the Atlantic hurricane season’s first tropical depression or tropical storm later this week.

According to the latest advisory, a trough of low pressure remains over northeastern Mexico, producing a large area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms. Forecasters say development is not expected immediately while the system remains inland.

However, the disturbance is forecast to drift northward before turning northeast toward the Texas coast. Meteorologists say the system could re-emerge over the northwestern Gulf by late Tuesday or Wednesday, where conditions may become favorable for additional development.

The National Hurricane Center warns that if the system moves back over water, a short-lived tropical storm could form.

Regardless of whether tropical cyclone formation occurs, the disturbance is expected to bring significant impacts to parts of the United States Gulf Coast. Southern and eastern Texas, along with portions of Louisiana and Mississippi, could experience periods of intense rainfall, gusty winds, and localized coastal flooding over the coming days.

Forecasters also note that some thunderstorms associated with the system may produce wind gusts approaching gale force. Tropical Storm Watches or Warnings could be issued for portions of the Gulf Coast as early as Tuesday if development becomes more likely.

For Belize, the system currently poses no direct threat. The disturbance remains well north of the country and is forecast to track toward the Texas coastline.

Still, weather experts remind Belizeans that the appearance of the first potential tropical system of the Atlantic season is a sign that hurricane season is beginning to become more active. Residents are encouraged to continue monitoring official forecasts and ensure hurricane preparedness plans remain in place as the season progresses.

The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs through November 30, with activity typically increasing significantly during August, September, and October.
