World number one, Aryna Sabalenka, is on course for a third straight US Open title.
The Belarusian breezed into the quarterfinals at Flushing Meadows in New York with a six-four, six-three victory over unseeded American Taylor Townsend.
Day eight produced very few upsets, with third seed Jessica Pegula of the United States and sixth-seeded Czech Linda Noskova also through to the last eight.
Noskova, who won the Wimbledon singles title in July, had to dig deep to beat eleventh seed Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine, seven-five, five-seven, six-four. In the men’s singles, second seed Carlos Alcaraz is improving with every match he plays on his return from a four-month injury lay-off.
He beat American 20th seed Tommy Paul in straight sets in their fourth-round match.
