Hal Williams, Beloved ‘Sanford and Son’ and ‘227’ Actor, Dies at 91

(AURN News) — Actor Hal Williams, best known for his roles on “Sanford and Son” and “227,” has died at 91, according to Deadline.

Williams passed away in Rancho Mirage, California, according to his representative.

On “Sanford and Son,” he played Officer “Smitty” Smith, one half of the police duo whose appearances brought laughs. He later reprised the role on “Sanford.”

Williams starred as Lester Jenkins, the husband and father on the groundbreaking Black sitcom “227,” alongside Marla Gibbs, Jackée Harry, Regina King and Helen Martin.

His six-decade career included “Private Benjamin,” “The Sinbad Show,” “Good Times,” “Moesha,” “Parks and Recreation” and the rebooted “Matlock.” His film credits included “Guess Who,” “Flight” and “The Rookie.”

Williams also established a scholarship foundation honoring his late son to support students of color pursuing degrees in television and communications.
