Important UPDATE to SASSA Childcare Grants in May 2026

It’s actually good news for SASSA Childcare Grants in May 2026 for once. The April cycle was one of the worst in recent memory for its more-than 14-million recipients. The agency pushed back payments a week and delayed funds till after the Easter long weekend.

Therefore, Thursday 7 May 2026 is the date you need to mark in your diary. Also, the actual grant amounts paid for SASSA Childcare Grants in May 2026 won’t change again after this month’s increases, confirms the South African Social Security Agency.

Firstly, SASSA Child Support moves from R560 to R580. Because it is paid to more than 13-million qualifying households with children under the age of 18, it the most expensive grant of all to the national fiscus.

WHO QUALIFIES FOR SASSA CHILD SUPPORT IN 2026?

For any new parents thinking of applying for Child Support, to be eligible, you must earn no more than R5 100 per month, or R61 200 per year. Similarly, married couples/partners may not earn more than R10 200 per month, or R122 400 per year. Interestingly, if you start child support from the month a newborn is born, you will receive approximately R190 000 in financial support (adjusted for inflation), until they turn 18.

Don’t forget that SASSA Childcare Grants in May 2026 also include – SASSA Foster Child and SASSA Care Dependency Grants. As titled, the former is only for court-appointed homes that care for foster children. And this recently increased by R40, from R1 250 to R1 290.

The latter, SASSA Care Dependency, is for mentally and/or physically disabled children under the age of 18. It increased by R80 from R2 320 to R2 400 this month. Disability, whether temporary or permanent, has to be determined by state-appointed doctor, officially acknowledged by SASSA. Recipients cannot receive more than one SASSA grant per month.

Besides the income requirements for SASSA Childcare Grants in May 2026 mentioned above, there are a few agency administrative needs you must comply with. Previously, the waiting period for SASSA approval was a maximum of three months. Now the department says they can be processed as fast as 24 hours. Make sure you bring the following:
