Institute for Social and Cultural Research discuss safeguarding living traditions of Deer Dance

By Zoila Palma:  On July 24, 2026, the Institute for Social and Cultural Research (ISCR-NICH) and cultural advocates from the communities of Armenia, Maya Mopan, and Valley of Peace met to discuss the ongoing efforts to safeguard the living traditions of the Deer Dance.

Led by ISCR Director Rolando Cocom, the engagement provided an opportunity for community practitioners to share their knowledge, reaffirm the importance of honouring cultural traditions and community protocols, and identify meaningful pathways for continued collaboration in safeguarding this cherished heritage. 

Looking ahead, ISCR will extend consultations to Deer Dance practitioners from communities in southern Belize. Through continued dialogue and mutual respect, we aim to strengthen partnerships with community practitioners, ensuring that safeguarding efforts remain community-led, respecting traditions, and sustainable for future generations.

ISCR extended appreciation to Francis Fonseca, Minister of Culture; Albert Vaughan, NICH President; and the Ministry of Indigenous Affairs for their continued commitment and encouragement in safeguarding and promoting the enduring traditions of our Belizean people.
