By Zoila Palma: Today, September 5, marks the first International Day of the World’s Indigenous Women and Girls, highlighting their leadership, resilience, knowledge and vital contributions to Indigenous communities and society.
Indigenous women and girls serve as leaders, knowledge keepers, caregivers and stewards of their lands and territories. They play an important role in preserving Indigenous languages, traditional knowledge, governance systems and biodiversity, while contributing to the well-being and resilience of their communities.
Despite these contributions, Indigenous women and girls continue to face significant structural inequalities, including poverty, limited access to education, healthcare, land and resources, justice and decision-making. They are also disproportionately affected by trafficking and other forms of gender-based violence.
The United Nations General Assembly established the International Day through Resolution A/RES/80/10 on November 26, 2025, designating September 5 as an annual day of observance.
