International News: Hantavirus cases linked to cruise ship rises to 7

By Zoila Palma:  Health authorities have confirmed that an American and a French national tested positive for hantavirus after leaving the cruise ship MV Hondius, which has been linked to a deadly outbreak that has already claimed three lives.

According to the World Health Organization, seven confirmed cases connected to the ship have now been identified, while two additional suspected cases are under investigation.

Two British nationals with confirmed infections are currently receiving treatment in the Netherlands and South Africa, BBC reports.

US health officials said a second American passenger on a repatriation flight showed mild symptoms and both individuals returned home in biocontainment units “out of an abundance of caution.”

In France, Health Minister Stéphanie Rist said an infected woman was isolating in Paris and her condition was worsening, while authorities traced 22 contacts.

The MV Hondius, which departed Ushuaia, Argentina, on April 1, is currently docked in Tenerife in Spain’s Canary Islands.

More than 90 passengers are being repatriated as officials continue monitoring those exposed to the virus.

Passengers from several countries, including the United States, Britain, Canada, Spain, the Netherlands, and Ukraine, are either in quarantine or under medical observation.
