ARUSHA: INTERNATIONAL Parliamentary Union (IPU) Secretary-General Ambassador Anda Filip has arrived in Tanzania ahead of the 153rd IPU Assembly, scheduled to take place in Arusha from October 5 to 9, 2026.
The IPU is the global organisation of national parliaments, bringing together lawmakers to promote parliamentary dialogue and cooperation on issues of common concern.
When she arrived at Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA) on Tuesday evening Ambassador Filip was received by Tanzania’s Ambassador responsible for the IPU Desk in Geneva, Ms Hoyce Temu, and Chairperson of the National Preparatory Experts Committee, Daniel Eliufoo.
Her arrival comes as Tanzania finalises preparations to host the global parliamentary gathering, which is expected to bring together more than 2,000 participants from 183 IPU member parliaments.
The participants will include Speakers, parliamentarians, parliamentary secretaries and other officials from member countries.
The 153rd Assembly will be held under the theme, “Enhancing good governance and empowering communities through inclusivity, trust and opportunities for all.”
Ambassador Filip, a Romanian national, was elected IPU Secretary-General in Istanbul in April 2026 and assumed office on July 1, becoming the first woman to lead the IPU Secretariat in the organisation’s 137-year history.
The Assembly is expected to provide a platform for parliamentarians from across the world to deliberate on issues related to good governance, inclusion, public trust and opportunities for communities.
Tanzania’s hosting of the Assembly places Arusha at the centre of international parliamentary diplomacy as delegates from IPU member parliaments converge for the five-day meeting.
