President Mnangagwa Swears In New Chief Justice Elizabeth Gwaunza
President Emmerson Mnangagwa has sworn in Zimbabwe’s new Chief Justice, Elizabeth Gwaunza, and Deputy Chief Justice, Paddington Garwe, during a ceremony at State House in Harare on Monday morning.

Her appointment marks a historic milestone for the country’s judiciary, breaking nearly a century of male-only leadership at the apex court to become Zimbabwe’s first-ever female Chief Justice.
Several other key officials were also sworn in during the ceremony, including Tsitsi Zhou as Deputy Minister of Lands and Rural Development, and Vimbai Chikwenhere as the newly appointed Auditor-General. Additionally, Dr Rugare Abigail Kangwe, Retired Colonel Lioba Tendai Gunduza, and Ernest Takeaway Manyau took their oaths as members of the Health Service Commission.
Speaking after taking her oath, Chief Justice Gwaunza called on judicial officers and legal practitioners to uphold professionalism and integrity.
“To the judges, just do your work the best way you know how,” she said, while urging both judges and lawyers to remain ethical and strictly guided by the law in the discharge of their duties.
Asked how she would handle claims that the judiciary is captured, Chief Justice Gwaunza said she is no stranger to the system, having carried out her duties professionally for years.
She urged judges to stick to their work with integrity and not get swayed by public opinion, stressing that their role is not to please people but to deliver sound judgments guided by conscience.
