As part of the implementation of Mauritania’s national security strategy in its intellectual dimension, aimed at combating extremist and radical ideologies that pose a direct threat to the security of individuals and society and distort the true teachings of Islam and its values of tolerance and moderation, His Excellency the President of the Republic, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, tasked a group of prominent Islamic scholars, renowned for their knowledge, integrity, and moral rectitude, with engaging in an in-depth doctrinal dialogue with a number of prisoners convicted of extremism-related offenses.
These exchanges led the majority of the participants to reassess their beliefs and ideological positions, express remorse for their actions, and seek forgiveness for the harm caused to the State and society. They also demonstrated a sincere commitment to returning to the right path and reintegrating fully into society.
This experience once again confirms the effectiveness of the Mauritanian approach to combating extremism and addressing its root causes through a policy that combines firmness in safeguarding the security of the State and society with openness to ideological revision and the rehabilitation of those who have genuinely renounced extremist beliefs. This approach has received recognition and praise at both the regional and international levels.
In order to provide those who have revised their convictions, renounced extremism, and demonstrated the sincerity of their repentance with a genuine opportunity to reintegrate into normal social life, and following the successful completion of all phases of the dialogue process conducted under the supervision of the competent authorities, which unanimously endorsed its outcomes, the Presidency of the Republic announced that, by decree issued today, the following measures have been decided:
– Three (3) common-law prisoners have been granted a pardon covering the remainder of their custodial sentences, as well as any fines, court costs, and judicial expenses imposed upon them.
– Six (6) convicted individuals have been granted a commutation of sentence, whereby their principal sentences are deemed to have been fully served based on the period already spent in detention.
