RC directs councils to support traders

MWANZA: MWANZA Regional Commissioner CP Salum Hamduni has directed local government leaders and Mwanza City Council officials to create a favourable environment for traders to conduct their businesses efficiently and contribute to regional development.

CP Hamduni issued the directive yesterday during a working visit to Mwanza City Council, where he stressed the need for suitable trading areas with essential infrastructure.

He said council development plans should prioritise business infrastructure, including markets, trading areas, roads, water, sanitation and other essential services.

According to CP Hamduni, improving the business environment would stimulate economic activity, create employment and increase government revenue through taxes and levies.

He also urged leaders to educate citizens on the importance of complying with laws and regulations, saying public awareness was essential for building a responsible society.

On land disputes, the Regional Commissioner directed authorities to handle complaints promptly and in accordance with established laws, procedures and boundaries.

He stressed the need to hear all parties before decisions are made, saying timely resolution of disputes would reduce grievances and enable citizens to pursue their economic and social activities peacefully.

On revenue collection, CP Hamduni urged local authorities to strengthen collection plans while ensuring accountability in the use of public funds.

He said councils should prioritise expenditure on projects that directly benefit citizens. Meanwhile, Nyamagana District Commissioner Amina Makilagi said the district is continuing to strengthen sanitation, waste management and environmental conservation through the involvement of citizens, community groups and private companies.

She said 110,617 tonnes of solid waste, equivalent to 85 per cent of the 129,948-tonne target, had been collected and transported from 22 waste collection centres to the Buhongwa landfill.

Ms Makilagi said the council had also continued providing sewage treatment services at public facilities, including Nyamagana District Hospital, health centres, schools, markets, slaughterhouses and the Nyabulogoya Bus Stand.

She said 143 trips had been made, with about 1,098,500 litres of sewage treated. The district has also continued a monthly cleanliness campaign held on the last Saturday of every month, attracting citizens, businesses, institutions and government leaders.
