Highlighting the 49 life-changing partnerships between children with autism and their support dogs, showing how these special bonds transform daily lives.
South Africa (09 April 2026) – While many South Africans recognise the South African Guide Dog Association (SAGDA) for its work in Guide Dog Mobility Training, there is another extraordinary part of their mission. And that includes training dogs to support children on the autism spectrum.
Throughout Autism Awareness Month, SAGDA is celebrating the remarkable children and families at the heart of its Autism Support Dog programme. These specially trained dogs are more than companions, but also provide comfort, support, and independence to children navigating daily life with autism, creating bonds that transform the lives of the whole family.
To honour these life-changing partnerships, the Autism Support Dog Department has designed a unique T-shirt.
Its striking design features 49 paw prints nestled within 49 small handprints, with each one representing a real match between a child and their Autism Support Dog. Every print on the T-shirt is genuine, capturing a living, breathing connection: the children and their dogs created each print and sent them back to the organisation, turning the garment into a collection of authentic, shared moments.
SAGDA trainers and staff will proudly wear these T-shirts every Friday, using them as a way to spark conversations, raise awareness about autism, and celebrate the 49 matches that have already been made possible.
“Our Autism Support Dogs change lives in ways that words alone can’t describe. It’s incredible to see the confidence, calmness, and joy these dogs bring to children and their families.”
For the 49 children who have already found their four-legged partners (and the many more waiting for their turn), these dogs are helping to make everyday life a little easier.
