Sierra Leone Advances Artificial Intelligence Agenda to Expand Digital Opportunities

The Ministry of Communication, Technology and Innovation  has announced plans to develop Sierra Leone’s first-ever National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy in collaboration with the World Bank Group  and other partners. The initiative marks a significant step in the country’s efforts to prepare for the adoption and governance of emerging AI technologies.

As part of the process, the ministry has produced a Draft Sierra Leone AI Readiness Diagnostic Report aimed at assessing the country’s preparedness to implement artificial intelligence in a responsible, inclusive, and citizen-focused manner. The report evaluates the nation’s institutional, technological, and social readiness to ensure that AI development benefits all Sierra Leoneans.

To support the strategy development process, the ministry has convened a three-day stakeholder engagement bringing together representatives from media organisations, civil society, government institutions, and the private sector. According to the ministry, the consultations are intended to ensure that the National AI Strategy reflects the realities, priorities, and voices of Sierra Leone’s people, including consideration for local languages and cultural contexts.

Officials said the initiative is designed to promote collaboration, trust, and broad public participation in shaping the country’s AI future. The ministry emphasized that the strategy will serve as a foundation for guiding the ethical and inclusive use of artificial intelligence while positioning Sierra Leone to take advantage of emerging digital opportunities.
