Signs point to Pirates winning the league

Orlando Pirates might not have played, but Mamelodi Sundowns’ result against Stellenbosch FC still felt like a win for them.

Signs point to Pirates winning the league

Orlando Pirates supporters have been similing since Wednesday night. Mamelodi Sundowns’ 1-1 draw with Stellenbosch FC has quickly change the intensity of the Betway Premiership title race.

What looked like another title for Sundowns has suddenly pulled the Buccaneers back into contention.

THULASIZWE MBUYANE SAYS ORLANDO PIRATES ARE IN THE TITLE RACE

Abdeslam Ouaddou’s side remain on top of the league with 58 points, while Sundowns lurk in second spot with 57 points, and crucially a game in hand.

Former Pirates striker Thulasizwe Mbuyane believes this moment could be bigger than just dropped points, it could be the turning point.

He feels Sundowns showed signs of pressure, something that has not been common this season. And when that happens, teams chasing behind start to smell opportunity.

“Stellenbosch are a good team, hence Sundowns started losing the ball a lot. Sundowns were too desperate to win,” Mbuyane told KickOff.

“This will make Pirates more confident heading into the weekend’s derby, as they now know they will need to win the derby to be in the best position to win the league. This is perfect motivation for Pirates going into the derby.

“Having games in hand doesn’t mean you already have points. You will never know if the teams at the bottom will disrupt your plans to win the league or not. You need to take one game at a time,” the former Orlando Pirates striker concluded.
