Victoria Pearls Captain Janet Mbabazi led from the front with a well-constructed half-century, guiding her side to the Capricorn Series title.
Namibia came into the final with recent bias in their favour after defeating Uganda twice in the group games.
The hosts won the toss and elected to bowl first; Uganda had posted big totals every time they batted first.
Janet Mbabazi (61) and Stephanie Nampiina (27) put on an opening stand that anchored Uganda’s run-scoring. In-form Proscovia Alako didn’t have much influence on the game, but Rita Musamali (31 not out) and Esther Iloku (15 not out) made sure the second innings would need a lot of grit from Namibia as Uganda posted 146/3 in their quota of 20 overs.
In the run chase, the final was about how much each captain would score and Sune Whittman (33) top-scored for her team, and the opening stand of 51 with Gorases Mezerly (27) made sure they stayed within the required rate.
Consy Aweko (2/30) and Malisa (2/25) put the brakes on things, and the loss of regulation wickets derailed the run chase for Namibia.
The run chase ran out of steam with 17 runs still needed, with Uganda inflicting defeat when it mattered most.
It was a great return for the Victoria Pearls, who dropped only two games in the series to the hosts, but defeated Hong Kong China and Tanzania twice.
There are also lessons for the Victoria Pearls, especially the promotion of Proscovia Alako and Stephanie Nampiina, with the former looking very comfortable as she gave a return of 175 runs in her seven innings.
Janet Mbabazi was also consistent at the top with 207 runs from her seven innings; Immaculate Nakisuyi was dropped down the order to have more influence with her power, and her return of 107 runs with a decisive knock in one of the games is decent.
Sarah Walaza, on her return from maternity, also made a good account of herself; she bowled well with the new ball and made crucial breakthroughs whenever required.
Sarah Akiteng didn’t have the impact that a left-arm spinner allows you in the game, and she lost her place to Asumin Akurut, who can bowl and bat.
However, Jimia Muhammad never got a game in the entire series, and youngster Irene Mutonyi only featured in a single game; in a seven-game series, a better rotation could have allowed each one of them to feature in at least three games.
A worthwhile tour for the Victoria Pearls in a not-so-busy year for them as they continue to prepare for a decisive 2027.
