Somali authorities say 27 Al Shabaab fighters have been killed in a coordinated military operation carried out by national forces with support from regional units and international partners in southern Somalia.

The defense ministry said the offensive targeted militant strongholds in the districts of Jilib, Hagar, and Afmadow in the Middle and Lower Juba regions, areas long considered key operational zones for the group.

According to officials, several of those killed were senior figures within the organization, while security forces also seized weapons, military equipment, and landmines believed to have been prepared for attacks on civilians and infrastructure.

The operation combined ground advances by Somali and allied forces with targeted airstrikes conducted by international partners, highlighting the continued role of external support in counterinsurgency efforts.

The offensive is part of a broader government campaign aimed at weakening Al Shabaab’s capabilities and regaining control over territories where the group has maintained influence.

A central component of this strategy is the support provided by the African Union mission in Somalia, whose mandate has been extended until the end of 2026 to help stabilize conflict-affected areas and assist Somali forces.

The United Nations continues to provide logistical and administrative backing to the mission, enabling the deployment and sustainment of thousands of personnel, including police units.

Officials say such coordinated operations will remain a key part of Somalia’s security strategy as the government works to consolidate territorial gains and advance long-term stabilization.
