Stopped by police for circling around in ski masks: ‘Button-would-be bandits’ busted before burglary

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Two Belize City men were fined $1,000 each on Monday after pleading guilty to going equipped to commit burglary following an early-morning police interception in the Buttonwood Bay area.

Josh Nicholas Flowers, 28, and Mauricio Antonio Cherrington, also 28, appeared unrepresented before Senior Magistrate Mannon Dennison in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, where both admitted to the offence.

Police say the men were intercepted at around 4:37 a.m. on Saturday, August 29, while travelling together on a red Lifan motorcycle near the intersection of Buttonwood Boulevard and Bay Street.

According to police, both men were wearing ski masks when officers stopped them. A subsequent search reportedly led to the discovery of a pair of pliers and a screwdriver beneath the motorcycle seat.

Police alleged that the items, along with the masks, were intended to be used in the commission of a burglary. The motorcycle reportedly had no licence plate.

Flowers and Cherrington were taken into custody and later charged with going equipped to commit burglary.

After accepting their guilty pleas, Senior Magistrate Dennison fined each man $1,000 plus $5 cost of court. They were given until November 3, 2026, to pay their fines, or face five months in prison in default.

The court heard that Flowers has a previous conviction for handling stolen goods, while Cherrington was treated as a first-time offender for the offence before the court.
