Tamika Staples: A Calling, A Rhythm, A Joyful Noise

For gospel musician and percussionist Tamika Staples, music began with a simple piano lesson and evolved into a divine calling. As a young girl, Staples was introduced to piano, but her teacher quickly noticed something different in her. She didn’t possess the passion for the keys, she discovered a natural passion and calming presence when she played percussion, a

connection that would ultimately shape her musical journey.

On her 16th birthday, she was gifted a Yamaha drum set , finally giving her a vessel to store the anointing that she had been granted from birth.

“I got my start as a singer, I sung with the Apostolic Angels, my mama would make us sing in

the choir, so I knew I was gonna be in trained up to be something big”.

Today, Staples stands among a growing number of women making their legacy known in gospel.

Bringing a commanding presence, technical skill, and unmistakable spirit to a space historically

dominated by men.
Throughout her career, she has worked alongside some of the biggest names in music, earning her place as a respected musician while becoming an example for

women pursuing their own callings behind the scenes and on the stage.

For Staples, however, the journey is bigger than musicianship. Her artistry reflects what it means to be called, anointed, and chosen.

“I just let God do the work, I’m obedient and I’m a good student, that’s the perfect combination of

you really want God to use you.”

Every beat becomes an extension of her faith, discipline, and willingness to walk boldly in the purpose placed before her.

“Coming from a musical family, coming out of the church, you can’t hide from your calling, and

the people I’ve worked with, played with, we all understand it’s for the kingdom, and we have fun

serving.”

Through her formative years as a musician, Tamika has graced the stages of The Stellar Awards, The Grammy’s, and dozens of other accolades, aligning her with opportunities for some of the biggest names in music, but as she carves out her own lane, Tamika’s dreams became more tunnel vision and the discipline to believe .

Now, Staples is entering another exciting chapter. She is preparing for the release of her upcoming album while expanding her creative reach with an animated children’s series, Tamika and the Family. Through both projects, she hopes to introduce audiences to another dimension of her artistry while creating meaningful, family-centered entertainment for a younger generation.

As Tamika Staples continues to evolve, her story remains rooted in the same place it began: a young girl discovering that the music inside of her was connected to something much greater.

Today, she is using that gift to create, inspire, and remind others that when you recognize your calling, there is power in choosing to answer it.
