Teen hero receives lifeguard training offer after saving twins

A boy (16) from the Omusati region who rescued toddler twins from drowning has been offered professional lifeguard training and future employment opportunities following his actions.

Kornelius Shimwafeni recently rescued the twins from a pond at Omutundungu village after the children were allegedly thrown into the water by their mother.

Following the incident, Monarch Lifeguard announced that Shimwafeni and his family had accepted a ‘Heroic Bravery Reward Certificate’ together with a free beginner and junior lifeguard training programme.

Founder Marthin Muyenga says the initiative aims to equip the teenager with water rescue techniques, first aid skills and lifesaving knowledge for both coastal and inland water environments.

“This life-changing opportunity will equip Cornelius with professional coastal and inland water rescue techniques, first aid skills in aquatic environments and lifesaving knowledge that will shape his future and strengthen his calling as a protector of lives,” Muyenga says.

He says Shimwafeni will also have an opportunity to serve on lifeguarding duty during the December holidays, allowing him to earn an income to support his education while gaining practical experience.

Muyenga says the organisation has promised that heroes will not go unnoticed.

Prime minister Elijah Ngurare during a graduation ceremony at Triumphant College in Windhoek this week described Shimwafeni as a hero.

Shimwafeni is also reported to have rescued two boys aged between eight and 10 from a well last year while they were herding animals.
