The 2026 Tribeca Festival officially kicked off its 25th anniversary edition in New York City’s historic Beacon Theatre. Opening night belonged to the world premiere of HBO’s highly anticipated documentary, Earth, Wind & Fire (To Be Celestial VS That’s the Weight of the World).

The celebratory documentary explores Earth, Wind & Fire’s out-of-this-world music, visuals, metaphysics, and uninhibited joy. The project was helmed by Grammy- and Academy Award-winning director Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, who graced the opening night carpet alongside EWF core members Philip Bailey, Verdine White, and Ralph Johnson.

The Roots’ Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter and Ray Angry stepped out to support their bandmate’s directorial effort, while hip-hop pioneers Chuck D and Flavor Flav hit the red carpet. Music producer Jimmy Jam and Grammy-winning artist H.E.R. were also in attendance.

Before the lights went down, Tribeca Festival co-founders Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal took the stage to warmly welcome the crowd, reflecting on the festival’s humble post-9/11 beginnings and its incredible evolution into a global cultural institution over the past quarter-century.

While Earth, Wind & Fire’s legendary status is earmarked by some of the most infectiously energetic and awe-inducing live performances in history, Questlove’s documentary takes audiences all the way back to the foundation. The film chronicles exactly how the band originally formed and tracks their historic journey with plenty of psychedelic flair.

Viewers get an intimate, deep dive into the early life of the band’s visionary founder, Maurice White, through the eyes of his closest friends and family. The narrative maps out how the group intentionally expanded in size and scope, and outlines where they developed their legendary taste for the theatrical. The comprehensive documentary captures this journey through beautiful line-drawn style animations, rare archival concert footage, and a series of dynamic interviews with famous figures deeply influenced by the group, including Lionel Richie, Flea, and Barack and Michelle Obama.
