For many students, the leap from graduation to financial independence can feel like a daunting task. In today’s economic climate, traditional classroom learning is rarely enough to guarantee self-sufficiency.
Recognising this gap, Triumphant College, in partnership with Stem Power.org Ethiopia, recently launched a free, practical soap-making project designed to teach students how to build their own enterprises from scratch.
The initiative brought together students from Triumphant College alongside pupils from several local schools. By removing any financial barriers to entry, the fully funded programme ensured that young people from all backgrounds could participate, turning the training ground into a collaborative space.
Rather than focusing solely on the chemistry of production, the course combines technical, hands-on skill development with essential entrepreneurship training. Participants were guided through the entire lifecycle of a small business, from raw ingredient formulation to understanding how to package, price and market their products.
The ultimate goal is to encourage students to harness their creativity and generate an income while still managing their academic responsibilities.
For the participants, the impact of the workshop was practical.
“The soap-making training was very helpful and opened my eyes to business opportunities and self-employment,” says Namhadi Emmanuel, one of the attendees. “I learned practical skills I can use to start my own small business and improve my financial situation.”
Another participant, Loide Nanghonga, says the workshop offered both immediate household solutions and long-term business inspiration.
“The training was very educational and beneficial to me,” Nanghonga says. “I learned how to make affordable soap products for home use and business purposes. The training also inspired me to become more independent and entrepreneurial.”
By equipping young people with tangible skills, the collaboration between Triumphant College and Stem Power.org Ethiopia highlights a shifting approach to education that focuses less on preparing students to look for work, and more on empowering them to create it.
