In a Flooded Western Cape, Preschools Offer a Dry Haven of Hope

The storms have hit hard, but in communities like Khayelitsha, preschool classrooms and kitchens have emerged as literal beacons of hope – providing warm shelter and hot meals for families who can no longer cook for themselves.

Western Cape, South Africans (14 May 2026) – As we’ve shared in several stories this week, a devastating storm has battered the Western Cape.

Across communities, families are facing fear, disruption and uncertainty. Homes are leaking, schools are closed, and parents are scrambling to keep their children safe while holding everything else together.

For many of us, this storm is deeply unsettling. For others, it is catastrophic. In informal settlements, homes are fragile in the face of relentless rain and fierce winds. Structures collapse, belongings are lost, and entire families are left standing in knee-deep cold water with nowhere to go.

In neighbourhoods like Khayelitsha, preschools have become more than places of learning. They have become shelters of safety and warmth.

Behind the scenes, remarkable principals and teachers have been showing up with courage and compassion, cooking not only for the children in their care but often for entire communities.

“Our Nourish Our Children preschools become more than places of learning. They become spaces where frightened children find comfort, routine and a hot, nourishing meal. This is Ubuntu in action. This is resilience. And this is where Ladles of Love steps in,” shared Ladles of Love Founder Danny Diliberto.

The organisation’s Dignity Kitchen is already seeing a surge in need as more families are displaced and unable to cook for themselves.

“We are preparing meals, distributing food and doing everything we can to support our preschool network and the communities that rely on them.

But Ladles of Love cannot do this invaluable community work alone.

“We urgently need your support to keep food flowing to our preschools and to ensure that every child and every family affected by this storm has access to warm, nutritious meals during this critical time,” Danny explains.

Your donation will go directly towards purchasing food, supporting the charity’s kitchens and enabling volunteers and teams to respond where the need is greatest.

Every contribution, no matter the size, makes a meaningful difference.

“Together, we can be the calm in the storm.”
