Police capture two after surveillance, chase and shootout in Belmopan

By Aaron Humes: Two men who sustained injuries during a police chase and shootout near J&W Creekside in the Cayo District on Thursday morning are in custody. The encounter unfolded around 10:30 AM when law enforcement officers pursued a black Nissan Altima linked to suspicious activity.

During the exchange of gunfire, one suffered a bullet graze to the back of his leg, while the other sustained a graze to the head. Fortunately, both injuries are reported to be non-fatal, and the men were promptly transported to the Western Regional Hospital for treatment.

Upon apprehending the suspects, police discovered a cache of ammunition and a firearm inside the vehicle. Officers recovered a 9mm Beretta pistol, along with 28 rounds of 7.62 ammunition, 15 9×19 rounds, and an additional eight 9mm rounds. Notably, the vehicle also contained a security uniform and a Belize Defense Force (BDF) uniform.

Assistant Superintendent Stacy Smith provided details during a press briefing, confirming the recovery of the firearms and uniforms, and indicated that an internal review process was underway, given the use of police firearms during the incident.

“Police have detained two male persons for firearm-related offenses following a joint operation which consisted of surveillance and tactical response teams…” said ASP Smith. “I undertake to provide more details when it is warranted and not prejudicial to the ongoing investigation, but the information that I’ve shared is the extent to which the department wishes to share at this moment…”

As police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the case, the vehicle has been impounded for forensic examination.
