Somalia Launches Technical Working Group to Strengthen Undersea Cable Infrastructure

The National Communications Agency (NCA),  in collaboration with the International Finance Corporation (IFC),  convened the first meeting of the Submarine Cable Landing Technical Working Group (TWG) in Nairobi, Kenya. The meeting brought together representatives from telecommunications operators, submarine cable companies, Internet Service Providers (ISPs), and technical experts to strengthen the resilience and sustainable development of Somalia’s undersea cable infrastructure.

The two-day workshop aims to enhance cooperation between the National Communications Agency and stakeholders in the communications and technology sectors. Participants are working to develop a shared understanding of the challenges facing Somalia’s submarine cable infrastructure and to identify practical measures to improve the resilience, reliability, and expansion of the country’s high-speed internet connectivity.

Discussions during the workshop focus on key issues affecting the sector, including infrastructure management, market competition, investment in telecommunications infrastructure, and the implementation of regulations governing submarine cable systems in Somalia. The meeting also provides an opportunity for stakeholders to exchange technical expertise and strengthen coordination in support of the country’s digital development objectives.

Participants also reviewed the findings of a recently prepared report on Somalia’s telecommunications market. The report provides valuable information on the current state of the sector and assists stakeholders in identifying priorities for future investments, policy reforms, and infrastructure development initiatives.

During the opening session, the Director General of the National Communications Agency, Mr. Mustafa Yasin Sheikh, emphasized the importance of stronger cooperation among public and private sector stakeholders to improve the stability and reliability of Somalia’s digital infrastructure. He highlighted the critical role of submarine cables in supporting economic growth, promoting innovation, and enabling access to essential services throughout the country.

The establishment of the Technical Working Group represents an important step toward improving Somalia’s digital connectivity and ensuring that the country’s submarine cable infrastructure remains secure, sustainable, and capable of supporting future economic and technological development. Through continued collaboration among government institutions, telecommunications operators, and development partners, Somalia aims to strengthen its digital infrastructure and expand reliable internet access across the country.
