When a cauliflower disappeared from Johan Scott’s garden, he didn’t get angry… he planted more vegetables for everyone to share.
A cauliflower went missing one day in a small town called Heidelberg. Someone had taken it from outside Johan Scott’s house.
Now, most people might have been upset about that. They might have put up a big fence or a “Keep Out” sign.
But Johan had a different idea.
You see, Johan was a retired policeman, and he knew something important: people don’t usually steal vegetables unless they are very hungry.
So instead of getting angry, Johan decided to plant more food.
He planted tomatoes, beans, beetroot, eggplants and lots of other yummy vegetables. Soon, the little patch of grass outside his home turned into a beautiful garden bursting with colour.
And then Johan did something even more special.
He told everyone in the neighbourhood they could take what they needed for free.
“No charge,” he said with a smile. “If you’re hungry, you are welcome.”
Every day, people would stop by to pick vegetables for dinner. Some families took tomatoes. Others picked beans or beetroot. And whenever Johan saw someone enjoying the food, it made him happy.
“It makes my heart happy when I see people eating my vegetables,” Johan said.
Before long, people all across South Africa heard about Johan’s kindness. His story spread far and wide because it reminded everyone that even small acts of goodness can make a big difference.
And something amazing happened after that.
Other people started planting gardens too.
Some planted vegetables outside schools. Others grew food in parks, in old wheelbarrows, or in tiny gardens next to their homes. Kids even started growing vegetables for neighbours who needed help.
All because one man chose kindness over anger.
Archbishop Desmond Tutu once said, “Do your little bit of good where you are.”
And that’s exactly what Johan did.
Today, his story still reminds us that helping others doesn’t always require lots of money or grand plans. Sometimes, all you need is a few seeds, a little sunshine and a caring heart.
And maybe… this story is the tiny seed you needed to plant your own Good Things Garden too.
