By Breaking Belize News Staff: Nearly 30 years after the fatal shooting of rap legend Tupac Shakur, a Las Vegas jury has found Duane “Keefe D” Davis guilty of first-degree murder with a deadly weapon.
The jury returned the unanimous verdict Monday after less than three hours of deliberations, marking the first conviction in one of the most notorious murder cases in hip-hop history.
Prosecutors argued that Davis, 63, orchestrated the September 7, 1996 drive-by shooting in retaliation after Shakur and members of his entourage attacked Davis’ nephew, Orlando Anderson, at the MGM Grand earlier that night. While Davis was not accused of firing the fatal shots, prosecutors said he obtained and provided the gun used in the attack. Under Nevada law, a person can be convicted of murder for aiding or facilitating the killing.
The prosecution relied heavily on Davis’ own accounts of the shooting, including statements made during interviews with investigators, media appearances and his 2019 memoir Compton Street Legend. His defense maintained that those accounts were exaggerated or fictionalized and argued there was insufficient physical evidence tying him to the murder.
Shakur was shot while riding in a BMW driven by Death Row Records co-founder Marion “Suge” Knight near the Las Vegas Strip. He died six days later at the age of 25.
Davis now faces a potential life sentence. His sentence will be determined by a judge at a later date.
