59 schools to audition for Calypso and Soca Competition

Fifty-nine schools are preparing to showcase their talent as auditions begin for Saint Lucia’s National Schools Calypso and Soca Competition.

Organisers report that the Calypso category will include 26 primary and 14 secondary schools, while the Soca category will feature 14 primary and 9 secondary schools competing for a place in the finals.

Auditions will be held on Monday, May 5 and Tuesday, May 6. Schools will perform before a panel of judges as they compete for qualification.

Primary schools participating in the Calypso category include Fond Assau Primary, Vide Bouteille Primary, Les Etangs Combined, Canon Laurie Anglican Primary and Ave Maria Girls Primary, among others from across the island. In the Soca category, schools such as Vide Bouteille Primary, Les Etangs Combined, Ciceron RC Combined, Gros Islet Primary and Carmen Rene Memorial are expected to take part.

At the secondary level, Sir Ira Simmons Secondary, St Joseph’s Convent, Babonneau Secondary, Choiseul Secondary, Ciceron Secondary and St Mary’s College will compete in both Calypso and Soca categories. Other schools, including Entrepot Secondary and Leon Hess Comprehensive Secondary, will also participate.

After auditions, successful participants will attend training sessions to refine their performances before the competition.

The National Primary Schools Calypso and Soca Competition will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 3. The Secondary Schools Competition is set for Friday, June 5. Both events will take place at Mindoo Philip Park.

Tickets are EC$10 for students and EC$20 for general admission.
