American Cruise Lines Part 2
Part 2 of my exciting voyage on American Cruise Lines. Food, entertainment and much more
Wanda Haynes, Certified Sommelier
My voyage continues on the American Legend cruise ship with fine dining, fantastic cocktails, elevated desserts, and several glasses of wine.
The ship has three well thought-out dining areas that serve impeccable meals both day and night. The main restaurant is on the 1st deck, the Chesapeake Lounge is also on the 1st deck, and the Back Porch Cafe is on the 3rd deck. Every meal I ate was impeccable, from perfectly prepared omelets to blueberry pie made with Maine blueberries,The menu for the day is displayed on the TV channel dedicated to all things on The American Legend, along with an easy-to-read printed menu in the restaurant. The main restaurant offers several choices for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and it was easy to cater to specific dietary needs of each passenger. There are certain things that I don’t eat, and it wasn’t ever an issue. The crew on the ship clearly loves the company and the passengers, they are professional, with a warm charm to engage with you. Shirts tucked in, pressed slacks, company logo belts, the entire crew performs like a well-oiled machine.
No powdered eggs on this cruise ship, high-quality cuts of meat, locally sourced produce, moist chicken, hot coffee, crisp salads, tender steaks, and yummy desserts. Some of my favorite meals were the Faroe salmon wrap with a warm potato salad, braised short ribs, lobster bisque, omelets, and the hot Ruben pastrami on rye.
The Back Porch has breakfast sandwiches, loaded nachos, salads, burgers, hotdogs, and more. The Sky Lounge is also on the 3rd deck, serving an early breakfast, with a smaller crowd of passengers. Also surrounded by panoramic windows, comfy seating, inviting fellow travelers to relax. Plenty of packaged snacks, cold beverages, wine, American Cruise Lines famous baked cookies, and more is also in the Sky Lounge.
What was entertainment like Wanda?
The Chesapeake Lounge has live entertainment day and night, a resident pianist, soloists, dancers, trios, a hysterical comedian, and a band from NJ that rocked out! Passengers loved the band and danced the night away, with an encore and standing ovation. We also played bingo, movie trivia, and a historian spoke daily on the history relating to itineraries of the week. A culinary lesson by the head chef on preparing Dungeness crab cakes, and so much more. Chesapeake Lounge serves happy hour hors d’ oeuvres, cocktails made with top shelf liquor, a tempting wine list, and endless handmade snacks. The passengers raved over the hand-crafted milk shakes, chocolate covered strawberries, and buttery popcorn served during the entertainment. It all felt like hanging out with old friends that I hadn’t seen in a while. As a solo traveler I never felt alone, and people kept inviting me to sit with them during mealtime. Sharing life stories and getting to know one another. I made several new friends that I hope to see in the future. One passenger was on his 11th trip with American Cruise Lines and says he’s heading on voyage 12 soon.
A full laundry room is on the 1st deck with everything required to wash and iron your clothing. A fully equipped fitness center is available to keep that girlish figure while cruising. The captain allows passengers to see the inner workings of the ship at certain times of the day; it was cool to get an understanding of nautical terminology. The American Legend’s crew are dedicated to making the cruise amazing in any way possible with smiles and helpful hands.
