This is a fine twelve track showcase album by the rather mysterious singer, multi-instrumentalist and song-writer Amatah Keo (Keophila), based in France, singing primarily in English, and of Laotian heritage – the album title translates as “Hello”, which is appropriate enough for this release. Although he worked previously as a percussionist with several reggae bands, producer Roberto Sanchez has worked with Amatah since 2020, and he is probably best-known for the single Each One Teach One, which is included here; there are some lovely Laotian touches on this, and a vocal that betrays a slight influence from Michael Rose, these same two comments also apply to the upbeat Salawan and its dub which close the album.

Amatah himself is certainly an excellent roots vocalist, in some places a little reminiscent of Linval Thompson or Dennis Brown, and his songs are strong, conscious, impactful, and memorable; it is good to hear too Amatah’s own rootsy melodica playing popping up on Kula Tempo and its dub. The layered backings are of course by The Lone Ark Riddim Force, and Roberto’s dubs are squarely in a 70s/ 80s roots style, complementing Amatah’s own vibe beautifully.

This release is strongly recommended to roots lovers, of course.
