By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The World Cup is over, the trophy is in Madrid, and Argentina’s heartbreak has entered a familiar stage: the petition.
Just days after Argentina’s 1-0 extra-time loss to Spain in the World Cup final, an Argentine fan has launched a campaign calling for the match to be replayed. The petition, created on Change.org by Gisela Sanchez, has gathered more than 80,200 signatures at the time of writing.
The campaign questions the performance of Slovenian referee Slavko Vinčić and calls on FIFA to review the refereeing decisions taken during the match, with the petition’s author claiming those decisions heavily impacted the course of the final. Those claims are the petitioner’s assertions, and FIFA has given no indication of any review.
The final was certainly an ill-tempered affair. Argentina collected six cards on the night, including a second yellow that saw Enzo Fernández sent off, and tempers boiled over into a post-whistle scuffle between the sides. But the match statistics tell a harder truth for the replay campaign: Spain dominated with 68 percent possession and 20 shots, while Argentina failed to register a single shot on target across 120 minutes, with Emiliano Martínez’s record 12 saves the only thing keeping the score at one.
There is also the small matter of precedent, or rather, the total absence of one. FIFA has never replayed a World Cup final, and petitions of this kind have a well-documented record of achieving nothing beyond catharsis.
Indeed, Argentine fans know that better than anyone, because the last time this happened, they were on the other side. After Argentina beat France in the epic 2022 final, heartbroken French fans launched their own petition demanding a replay, amassing hundreds of thousands of signatures, and Argentine supporters responded with a gleeful counter-petition telling France to stop crying. Four years later, football’s wheel of irony has completed its turn.
For Belize’s legions of Albiceleste faithful, still nursing the wounds of Sunday, the petition may offer a moment of solidarity, if not much hope. The final will stand, Spain will remain champions, and the healing, as always, will have to come the old-fashioned way.
So be honest, Belize: would you sign it? Comment below.
