State-owned contractor August 26 Construction has been awarded a tender to build the Namibian Traffic Information System’s Wanaheda branch in Windhoek.
Minister of works and transport Veikko Nekundi announced this on Wednesday.
“There is powerful symbolism in breaking ground on a facility for the Namibian people with a contractor that belongs to the Namibian people,” he said.
The project will be overseen by the Roads Authority (RA).
The Wanaheda office will alleviate pressure on Natis’ Windhoek branch in the city’s southern industrial area.
Nekundi said August 26 Construction has been encouraged to prioritise local expenditure throughout the construction period.
The construction of the Wanaheda Natis centre is expected to employ 200 skilled and unskilled workers.
The facility will accommodate learner driver testing, driver testing, and roadworthy testing for smaller and heavier vehicles, as well as serve as a permit office.
