BC NDP: Doerkson asks British Columbians to gamble on party’s far right members

THE BC NDP said that BC Conservative Interim Leader Lorne Doerkson on Sunday failed to coherently explain how he would overcome his party’s constitution preventing an interim leader from becoming the permanent leader:

“Yeah, so it’s my understanding that we would call leadership a race, but it could be years down the road. That would be if I remained as interim leader. I think the clarity that we’re trying to offer on this subject is simply that I will be, there will be, a resolution passed to make me leader the second I become Premier, which I’m betting on.” (Video)

The BC NDP pointed out that this confirms the party’s intention to ask the party’s far-right membership for a two-thirds mandate to allow him to stay on. Just 10% of those members voted for Doerkson’s preferred leadership candidate, Peter Milobar. 

It added that Doerkson’s response suggests that the party has sought a legal opinion on how he could attempt to hang on to power for several years if the members rejected him, but failed to provide any clarity on how that would work. 

It asked: “Lorne’s “betting on” party members picking him – but after four leaders in 10 months, why should British Columbians gamble on this chaotic party?”
