Belize @45 Workshop Explores Sovereignty and Nationhood

By Zoila Palma: The Belize @45 Workshop, a three-day professional development training, was held from August 5 to 7, 2026, bringing together educators from across the country to examine what Belize’s independence really means.

The training was a collaborative effort of the Institute for Social and Cultural Research (ISCR), the Belize Archives and Records Service (BARS), the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science & Technology (MOECST), specifically Ms. Ruby Reyes of the Belizean Studies Curriculum and Assessment Unit, the George Price Centre for Peace and Development, the University of Belize, and Galen University.

During the training, historian and diplomat Assad Shoman challenged educators to reflect on the “role of teachers and students in shaping Belize’s future.”

The event included virtual sessions and an in-person learning session at the George Price Centre for Peace and Development in Belmopan, equipping educators with new tools and perspectives to bring Belize’s history and independence journey to life for students.

Organizers emphasized that Belize’s independence is not simply an achievement of the past, but an ongoing process, underscoring the message: “Independence is the beginning!
