Belize Water Services urges conservation due to possible El Niño Conditions

By Zoila Palma:  Belize Water Services is urging residents to begin conserving water as climate experts monitor the possible development of El Niño conditions later this year.

Forecasts from international climate agencies indicate that Belize and other parts of Central America could experience hotter temperatures and reduced rainfall during the second half of 2026.

According to the World Meteorological Organization and the United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center, El Niño conditions are expected to develop between mid-2026 and early 2027 as temperatures in the Pacific Ocean continue to rise. These conditions are often linked to drier weather patterns and prolonged heat across the region.

Belize Water Services warned that the changing climate could increase drought conditions and place greater pressure on water supply systems.

BWS said the combination of reduced rainfall and rising temperatures may affect water availability if conservation measures are not taken early.

The company is encouraging Belizeans to adopt simple water-saving practices to help reduce unnecessary waste.

Recommended measures include fixing leaking pipes and faucets quickly, taking shorter showers, turning off taps when not in use, and only running full loads in washing machines and dishwashers.

Belize Water Services stressed that collective action will be important in protecting the country’s water future if El Niño conditions intensify.
