By Breaking Belize News Staff: A La Democracia Village man accused of murder and attempted murder was back in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where his case was adjourned to July 2, 2026.
Benyahti Brandon, 27, has been on remand for three months and 13 days after he was charged with the murder of Paul Smith Jr. and the attempted murder of 24-year-old Tyrece Lewis Allen.
Brandon appeared unrepresented before the Chief Magistrate in Court #1 around midday. The prosecutor informed the court that the case file is not yet ready, and since the matter remains within the disclosure timeline, an adjournment was granted.
Brandon was first arraigned on Thursday, February 5, 2026, following the fatal shooting, which occurred on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, in La Democracia Village.
According to police, officers responded to reports of shots fired on First Street in La Democracia around 10:25 a.m. When they arrived, they spoke with Destiny Mejia, 21, a park official and the girlfriend of Paul Smith Jr., who reported that Smith had been shot and transported to the Western Regional Hospital.
Police investigations revealed that around 9:00 a.m., Smith was walking with Mejia and Tyrece Allen when a male person reportedly ran from behind a house and fired several shots in their direction.
Smith ran but collapsed. He was later pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. Allen was shot in the knee, treated, and later released.
Scenes of Crime personnel processed the area and retrieved blood swabs, two knives, and surveillance footage from a camera in the area.
