Betway Premiership log after Kaizer Chiefs, Sundowns drop more points

Kaizer Chiefs dropped more points in the Betway Premiership this weekend while Sundowns also stuttered. Meanwhile, Orlando Pirates were on the continent.

Kaizer Chiefs produce a third stalemate

The Glamour Boys are now unbeaten in their first six outings, winning three and drawing the other three after Saturday’s 1-1 stalemate with Polokwane City. Lebo Maboe scored the Chiefs goal from a Pule Mmodi assist. Points away to Richards Bay and City, as well as a draw at home against Sundowns, aren’t terrible results in isolation. However, new boss Fernando Da Cruz will want to turn single points into three more often than not. Mamelodi Sundowns were held to a 1-1 draw by Chippa.

Sundowns remain top with 20 points after eight matches. Pirates are second with 13 points, but have three games in hand on the Brazilians. AmaZulu’s impressive start sees them third on 13 points after six games, while Chiefs sit fourth with 12 points after six outings.

Orlando Pirates qualify after a scare

The defending Betway Premiership champions had time off from their domestic affairs with a CAF Champions League qualifying clash with La Cure Waves FC. The Sea Robbers came from a goal down to win 3-1 thanks to strikes from Kabelo Kgositsile, Kamohelo Sebelebele and Yanela Mbuthuma. Pirates face Durban City in the league on Thursday 17 September. Chiefs travel to Golden Arrows on Sunday, 20 September.

End of the road for Ngcobo?

Nkosingiphile Ngcobo was an unused sub against Sundowns and was left out of matchday squads against Richards Bay, Sekhukhune, Siwelele and recently Polokwane City altogether. Perhaps this is a sign that his future lies elsewhere, after nine years in the first team.

Mofokeng to move to a better league soon?

Former Orlando Pirates star Rele Mofokeng’s scintillating form in the 2025-26 campaign earned him a move to Belgian Pro League side Union Saint-Gilloise. He followed Mohau Nkota and Mbekezeli Mbokazi out of the club, although Nkota has returned on loan after an underwhelming stint in Saudi Arabia. Mofokeng scored 10 goals and assisted eight times in 27 league outings last term.
