Authorities in western Uganda have launched an intensive search and rescue operation following a deadly boat accident on the River Nguse in Kagadi District on Tuesday evening, with dozens of passengers feared missing.

According to official police reports, the incident occurred at approximately 8:30 PM near Kyaleni Village in Pachwa Town Council. The vessel involved, a locally made canoe, is believed to have been carrying between 35 and 40 passengers at the time of the accident.

The passengers were primarily farmers and charcoal traders returning from neighboring Kikuube District when the boat capsized under unclear circumstances.

Search and rescue efforts underway
As of Thursday morning, only one survivor has been confirmed. The individual, identified as 27-year-old Byaruhanga Tumuhaise, was rescued shortly after the accident and has since provided initial testimony to authorities.

Marine Police units have deployed specialized teams to the River Nguse, where search and recovery operations are ongoing. However, efforts have been significantly complicated by the absence of a passenger manifest, making it difficult to determine the exact number and identities of those on board.

Authorities have appealed to members of the public, particularly relatives of potential victims, to report to Kagadi Central Police Station to assist in establishing an accurate list of the missing.

Preliminary findings point to multiple risk factors
Initial investigations suggest that a combination of factors contributed to the tragedy, with overloading cited as a major concern. The canoe reportedly carried both a large number of passengers and cargo, including charcoal.

Officials also highlighted the dangers of night travel, noting that poor visibility likely increased navigational risks and delayed emergency response. Authorities are also examining the structural condition of the vessel.

Calls for increased safety measures
The incident has renewed concerns over safety standards on Uganda’s inland waterways, where informal transport systems often operate with limited oversight.

Authorities have reiterated the importance of adhering to passenger limits, avoiding nighttime travel, and ensuring vessels meet basic safety requirements.

Investigations remain ongoing, with further updates expected as search operations continue.
