Boy, 16, charged in connection with year’s first homicide

A 16-year-old has been formally charged in connection with the fatal stabbing of another teenager, marking Saint Lucia’s first recorded homicide of the year.

Police reported that the incident occurred late on Friday, January 2, with the victim, Omar Joseph, also 16, succumbing to injuries shortly after midnight on Saturday, January 3.

Investigators said the juvenile suspect was initially charged on Wednesday, January 7, with the offence of wounding. The following day, the charge was upgraded, and he was charged indictably with murder.

On Friday, January 9, the accused appeared virtually before the First District Court, where he was remanded into custody at the Bordelais Correctional Facility’s Juvenile Centre.

He is expected to remain there until January 15, when the case is scheduled to return to court for a bail review.

The incident has sparked concern within the community, particularly given the ages of both the victim and the accused.
