By Breaking Belize News Staff: Police are investigating an early-morning shooting in San Pedro Town that left John Hernandez hospitalized in critical but stable condition.
Preliminary information indicates that the shooting occurred sometime between 4:00 and 4:30 a.m. on Sunday, August 16, shortly after Hernandez arrived at a residence and parked his golf cart.
Reports are that Hernandez was opening a gate when two men arrived on a motorcycle. The passenger reportedly got off the motorcycle and opened fire on Hernandez before the pair fled the area.
Sources say approximately 12 shots were fired, reportedly in rapid succession from what was described as a fully automatic pistol. Police have not yet publicly confirmed the type of weapon used.
Hernandez was reportedly struck in the upper back and leg. He was rushed for medical treatment and, as of late Sunday morning, was listed in critical but stable condition.
Hernandez’s name has also recently been before the courts. The 26-year-old is one of three San Pedro men jointly charged with one count of arson and two counts of aggravated assault in connection with a July 31, 2024 incident in the Tranquility Bay area of northern Ambergris Caye. Hernandez, Shelby Jonathan Hernandez and Hector Pop are accused of pursuing and firing at two fishermen before allegedly setting their boat on fire.
Hernandez and Pop are currently out on bail in that case. The three accused appeared in the High Court on July 22, when Justice Nigel Pilgrim informed them that their trial could not be accommodated on the remaining 2026 calendar and would have to be scheduled for 2027. The matter is due back before the court on September 16 for mention.
Police investigations into Sunday morning’s shooting continue.
