Star Saint Lucia high jumper Destinee Cenac will join the University of Kansas on a full scholarship next season. The CARIFTA Under-17 champion will continue both her studies and athletics in Lawrence, Kansas, starting in August.

Cenac, who attends St Joseph’s Convent, had a strong showing at this year’s secondary school track and field championships, winning the high jump, 100m, and 200m in her division. A Morne Stars Athletics Club member, she qualified for the CARIFTA Games by clearing over 1.70m several times, including a win at the Independence Games in February.
With coaching from brothers Len and Lenyn Leonce, Cenac won gold at the regional junior championships. She cleared a personal best of 1.72m to take the Under-17 title at Kirani James Stadium in St George’s, Grenada, during the Easter weekend.

After discussing with her mother Junita, Cenac chose KU over several other offers. She met with Jayhawks head coach Stanley Redwine and assistant coach Brian Wellman. Cenac, her mom, and her coaches also had a virtual meeting with Tom Hays, the associate head coach for vertical jumps, who will oversee her training.
Hays has twice earned Midwest Region Assistant Coach of the Year honours, most recently in 2021 when he helped Rylee Anderson win her second straight Big 12 title. Cenac joins a strong programme in Lawrence, where Saint Lucian 400m runner Michael Joseph has set national records and qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Cenac aims to continue the strong tradition of Saint Lucian high jump, following in the footsteps of Commonwealth Games gold medallist Levern Spencer and her Morne Stars teammate Jenneil Jacobie. She is currently wrapping up her CXC exams and plans to head to Kansas this summer.
