The Ministry of the Digital Economy, Posts and Telecommunications of the Central African Republic has announced the suspension of illegally imported Starlink kits operating within the national territory, citing regulatory compliance and national security considerations.
In an official communiqué issued in Bangui, the Ministry stated that the decision follows the enforcement of mandatory equipment homologation procedures required under national telecommunications regulations. Authorities emphasized that all telecommunications equipment used in the country must be approved to ensure compliance with both national and international technical standards.
The Ministry noted that the affected Starlink kits, particularly those operating in roaming mode and acquired from outside the country, had not yet met the required homologation conditions. As a result, their roaming functionality has been deactivated pending regulatory review. Officials also highlighted that the measure is intended to strengthen national security and improve oversight of active communication devices across the country.
The suspension is expected to enhance the ability of authorities to identify and monitor equipment in use, ensure traceability of users, and prevent unauthorized or improper use of telecommunications infrastructure.
The government clarified that the decision is not directed against legitimate users but is aimed at establishing a secure, transparent, and compliant framework for satellite internet usage in the country. Users affected by the suspension have been encouraged to regularize their equipment by approaching the Authority for Electronic Communications and Postal Regulation (ARCEP) to complete the necessary approval procedures.
The Ministry reiterated its commitment to ensuring lawful, regulated, and secure access to modern telecommunications technologies, including satellite-based services, as part of its broader efforts to manage digital infrastructure within the Central African Republic.
