Some interesting things happen when you find yourself in the news for the reasons that The Africa Centre has been over the past two months. There is the public reaction, which spans all layers of loss, from incredulity, to sadness, from anger to indignation: we have seen it all. All those reactions are justified and valid. More than anything, this indicates the depth of feeling that the public has for the organisation. On a more strategic level, this also reflects the awareness of the importance and fragility of Black community institutional infrastructure in the UK. It can only be hoped that this crisis catalyses a necessary conversation about the sustainability of these spaces.   When there’s a fire, bystanders either watch or act. Those who watch from the sidelines tend to either wring their hands in helpless horror or be the experts in how the fire started, seeking to direct...
