The Chadian government has declared three days of national mourning following two deadly attacks by militants linked to Boko Haram in the Lake Chad province, which left dozens of soldiers dead, including senior officers.
According to a presidential decree, the mourning period began on May 6 and will continue through May 9, in honor of soldiers described as having fallen in the line of duty during recent military operations in the Lake Chad Basin.
The directive orders flags to be flown at half-mast across public institutions and diplomatic missions, the suspension of festive activities nationwide, and restricted media programming focused on religious content.
The declaration follows two separate security incidents confirmed by military authorities and the presidency.
The first attack occurred on May 4, when militants assaulted an army position on an island in Lake Chad, killing 23 soldiers and wounding 26 others. The military reported a counteroffensive that resulted in the deaths of several attackers.
The second attack took place on May 6, when security force boats conducting patrols were ambushed. While no official casualty figures were released, military sources confirmed that two generals were among those killed.
The incidents represent a major escalation in violence in the Lake Chad region and highlight the persistent threat posed by armed groups.
President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ongoing military operations, emphasizing determination to restore security and pursue remaining militant cells.
The attacks come despite earlier claims that militants had lost operational bases following a major offensive in late 2024. However, analysts note a resurgence in violence.
