*Chaka Khan is launching a new musical era with “Chakzilla,” her latest single created with Sia and producer Greg Kurstin. The release signals the return of the music icon nearly seven years after her previous studio album and introduces the sound of her upcoming record, also titled “Chakzilla.”

The concept behind the song grew out of Khan’s childhood affection for monster movies. “When I was a kid, I really liked the Godzilla movies,” Khan tells PEOPLE. “When we came up with [‘Chakzilla’] as a title, lots of things just ran through my head and made a lot of sense.”

In the music video, Khan appears as a towering figure inspired by Godzilla, though her version is focused on restoration instead of destruction. The singer moves through a damaged city filled with tiny streets and cars while helping rebuild the environment around her. “Instead of becoming a monster and just tearing up things,” she explains, “I became sort of a monster of a person who does good things.”

Khan said the character closely matches her personality and values. “I tried to make it true to who I am and what I’m about,” she says. She also shared that the larger message behind Chakzilla centers on helping people through difficult times. “Everything I can that is cuckoo and crazy and awry,” says Khan. “I’m trying to fix and help a lot of people who are having a really hard time in this world today. There’s lots of madness going on.”

Sia contributed backing vocals to the track and also came up with its title. Khan praised her collaborator’s creativity, while Sia said in a statement, “Chaka is the Godzilla of chanteuses alive, and it was my honor to collaborate with her on this music!”

The full “Chakzilla” album arrives Sept. 18.
