In an afternoon where elegance meets purpose, the Motherless Daughters Foundation celebrated its 12th Annual Champions of Hope Awards Gala at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta on Sunday, February 28. The event brought together civic leaders, elected officials, corporate partners, philanthropists, and community advocates for a moment of inspiration, recognition, and forward-looking leadership.
A Night of Recognition and Inspiration

MC’d by award-winning journalist Monica Kaufman Pearson, the gala was more than a celebration—it was a strategic gathering of individuals who advance the Foundation’s mission: to empower, educate, and mentor girls who have experienced the loss of their mother. The program underscored the impact of the Foundation’s work and highlighted the pathways through which youth can transform grief into resilience and achievement.
Guests enjoyed an elevated dining experience and live entertainment, creating an atmosphere that matched the significance of the occasion. The event also featured a series of notable attendees and supporters, including former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, comedian Bo P, Jayden Williams (Mayor of Stockbridge), and other distinguished guests who lent their voices to the cause.
Honoring Courage, Community, and Leadership
The Champions of Hope Awards Gala is dedicated to recognizing individuals whose leadership and generosity have created meaningful change for families navigating loss and adversity. This year’s program featured a diverse slate of honorees whose work aligns with the Foundation’s core pillars: education, mentorship, and empowerment for youth.

Key honorees included:
Reginald Scandrett** — Sheriff of Henry County and the first Black Sheriff in the county’s history, recognized for his commitment to public safety and community engagement.
Shaquille O’Neal** — Honorary Chief of Community, Henry County Sheriff’s Office, for his ongoing dedication to service and community uplift.
Jan Lennon** — Airport Executive Deputy General Manager, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, acknowledged for leadership in a global aviation hub and dedication to community partnerships.
In addition to the honorees, the Foundation welcomed esteemed figures as Honorary Moms and Honorary Co-Chairs, including civil rights icon Dr. Xernona Clayton, Sylvia Robinson (former Mayor Bottoms’ mother), and Sylvia Dickens (Mayor Dickens’ mother). Their presence underscored the gala’s deep ties to longstanding civil rights leadership and mentorship across generations.
