Former Minister of Ethics and Integrity Miria Matembe has been granted a non-cash bail of Shs3 million after spending a night at Luzira Prison.
Matembe was on Tuesday arraigned before the Luzira Magistrate’s Court and charged with promoting sectarianism following her arrest over the weekend after reportedly going into hiding for five days.
The outspoken government critic and former legislator had earlier been the subject of a joint security operation in which operatives reportedly raided her home last week. The team is said to have arrived at around 10am but did not find her at the residence, as she had allegedly left before their arrival.
Sources say the operatives conducted a thorough search of the property, with parts of the house reportedly ransacked before they left with unspecified items. It remains unclear whether a search warrant had been issued or what exactly was taken during the operation.
Appearing in court, Matembe was formally charged with promoting sectarianism.
Through her lawyers led by Uganda Law Society vice president Anthony Asiimwe, she applied for bail, citing ill health and advanced age.
Prosecution alleges that in June 2026, while appearing on DK TV Uganda in Nakawa Division, Kampala, Matembe made statements suggesting that “all our taxes are being spent on Banyankole women ministers,” remarks prosecutors say were likely to promote hostility, hatred, or ill will against members of the Banyankole community.
