Hulu has officially ordered a comedy pilot inspired by the 1996 cult classic film The Cable Guy, locking in Damon Wayans Jr. and Jake Johnson to star and executive produce the project.
The pilot order arrives on the exact 30th anniversary of the original Ben Stiller-directed comedy, which first debuted in June 1996.
Rather than delivering a traditional, beat-for-beat remake, the show’s creators are aiming to honor the spirit of the original film.
In this updated iteration of the classic comedy, Johnson and Wayans Jr. will take on the movie’s central characters. Johnson is set to portray the eccentric, old-school cable technician Chip Douglas, a role originally made famous by Jim Carrey, while Wayans Jr. will step into the role of the straight-laced Steven Stephens, originally played by Matthew Broderick.
The series dynamically updates the 1996 premise for the modern streaming era. According to the show’s official logline, the narrative unfolds in a contemporary world driven by endless streaming platforms, binge-watching habits, and digital algorithms. In this landscape, old-school cable tech Chip Douglas languishes in isolation until Steven Stephens calls to have his traditional cable service turned back on.
This single service call reconnects Chip with a childhood friend he never forgot. While the reignited relationship initially gives both men a sense of connection they’ve been missing, the dynamic takes a sharp turn when Chip’s intense enthusiasm spirals into an outright obsession, exploring the darkly absurd side of modern male friendships.
The script for the pilot was penned by an impressive comedy roster, including Rob Rosell (It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia) alongside Joe Piarulli and Luan Thomas (Cobra Kai), who are all self-proclaimed massive fans of the original movie.
