Daylight shooting in the city leaves multiple injured

A shooting near Chaussee Road on Wednesday afternoon has left at least three people injured.

An eyewitness told St Lucia Times, on condition of anonymity, that the incident began when two masked men approached a male. The eyewitness described the masked men as the “aggressors”.

He said shortly after the confrontation, the men and the individual became engaged in an exchange of gunfire. The individual was shot during the incident, along with a passerby who was caught in the crossfire.

According to the eyewitness, the situation could have been even worse if not for the intervention of an off-duty police officer who happened to be nearby and responded immediately.

“I commend that police because I figure he’s very brave to have run in that area there by himself because if he didn’t do that, maybe the rass would have been dead on the ground,” the eyewitness said.

The incident has once again raised concerns among citizens about the level of crime and violence in the country, particularly incidents taking place in public spaces during the day.

“It’s morally destructive, it’s just inhumane, you understand?… Saint Lucians have to open their eyes to these things… we are all exposed to these kinds of dangers, you know, because when the violence starts, there’s no telling if it’s our cousin, our mother, our uncle, our son, even ourselves on the road could get caught in the crossfire,” the eyewitness added.

Police have not yet released an official statement on the incident.
